Visible Learning

Overview

Visible learning is an essential tool for students to understand where they are in their learning journey and where they are headed. Learning walls act as foundational anchors of the learning that students engage in throughout their inquiries, while providing a way for both the students and teacher to track their progress, reflect on what they have learned and develop next steps. Visible learning is a key scaffold of inquiry that provides an opportunity for students to take responsibility for their own learning.

  • The benefits of having an active learning wall in the classroom that students can interact with on a daily basis as their learning progresses include:
  • Having a physical resource of all the major learning that has occurred for students who have been absent.
  • Having a method for the teacher & students to track their progress, questions and goals throughout their inquiry.
  • Providing students with a daily opportunity to demonstrate their evidence of learning.
  • Fostering collaboration amongst students working towards a common learning goal.
  • Creating a physical space where students can see what they have learned, what they are expected to learn, and how they will get there.

Teachers should aim to develop a learning wall or visible learning wall at the start of the IINQ Unit and develop it throughout the year with their students. At the end of the unit, students should have visible evidence in the classroom of all the learning that has occurred, and what questions they still have.
