How did the policies created (Indian Act, Residential School) creates a power imbalance between Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people?

We can look at Bernard’s life in this section of the novel to help us learn what life was like for many Indigenous people as a cause of the policies.

There are elements which may be difficult for students:

  • Issues dealing with drinking and addictions
  • Homelessness
  • HIV/ AIDS

Plan for supports with school counsellors, helpline contacts, and opportunities for students to self-regulate and have a safe space to share thoughts, feelings, fears, and other big emotions.

Possible Provocation

Have students read the linked article on incarceration rates in the NWT. Once students have read the article, they can do a Notice/Wonder/Know.

  • Notice: What were some noticings that jumped out at you while reading this article?
  • Wonder: What does this article make you wonder about the balance of power in the NWT?
  • Know: What do we know about the balance of power in the NWT and how might that affect us individually?

Connection to the essential question

What is the disparity between Bernard and the government, Bernard and non-Indigenous people, and Bernard and yourself?

Document Analysis Idea

Are there any other examples at this point that would create a disparity in power between Bernard and society?

Reflective Assessment Example

Students will show their understanding of how residential schooling affected Bernard’s life. This can be done by looking at the following:

  • Alcohol abuse
  • Homelessness
  • Family neglect
  • Racism
  • Mental health

Students will need to be explicit about how residential schooling set Bernard’s life trajectory on its path.

Note: students can display their understanding in any way they choose

Connection to Mangilaluk Graphic Novel
